A game-changer for tourism and investment in Mexico’s top travel destination.
Since its inauguration on December 1, 2023, the Tulum International Airport, officially named Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport, has experienced remarkable growth, positioning itself as a key hub for tourism and economic development in the region.
Passenger Growth Surpasses Expectations
In its first year of operations, the airport exceeded initial projections by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which estimated 700,000 passengers. By December 2024, the airport had recorded over 1 million passengers, demonstrating its rapid adoption and preference among both domestic and international travelers.
Expansion of International Routes
Tulum International Airport has significantly expanded its global connectivity, now offering 15 direct international routes. Travelers can now fly directly from Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Montreal, Newark, New York, Panama, Toronto, Calgary, Bogotá, and Frankfurt, making Tulum more accessible than ever.
Outpacing Other Airports
Surprisingly, Tulum Airport has surpassed Mexico City’s Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) in international passenger traffic, underscoring its growing relevance in Mexico’s aviation sector.
Weather Challenges and Operational Resilience
In July 2024, the airport successfully implemented safety protocols in response to Hurricane Beryl, temporarily suspending operations to protect passengers and staff. This demonstrated the airport’s efficiency, resilience, and commitment to passenger safety in extreme weather conditions.
Future Outlook
With state-of-the-art infrastructure and a strategic location, Tulum International Airport is set to continue expanding, attracting more airlines and increasing its flight network. This growth not only enhances tourism in the Riviera Maya but also drives regional economic development, solidifying Tulum’s status as a world-class destination.
